Everybody sing along now, “”We’re not cookin’ tonight, we’re grillin’ tonight!”
Hey, wait a minute! That’s not Melvin Sparks!
Right you are.
The soul-jazz-blues singer-guitarist Melvin Sparks – the longtime face and voice of Price Chopper’s House of BBQ commercials – died two months ago, leaving the folks at Price Chopper with big shoes to fill on the eve of the outdoor grilling season. In fact, the shoes were so big that it apparently took two people to fill them.
That’s Allan Harris at the top of the page with a new TV commercial that just started airing this week. Meanwhile, here’s the new House of BBQ spot featuring the other new spokesperson, Lynn Sterling:
“We are thrilled to have found two such talented artists to carry the House of BBQ torch for us,” said Mona Golub, music fan and Price Chopper vice president of public relations. “Price Chopper’s House of BBQ has become a tradition here in the Northeast, a launching pad of sorts for the summer grilling season that inspires backyard gatherings and the communal enjoyment of flame-broiled meat, seafood and vegetables.”
Personally, we’re not sure if either one of the two new grillin’ singers can match the heat that Melvin brought, but we’re willing to give ’em some time to grow into their roles. In meantime, let’s hear Melvin Sparks fire it up one more time for old time’s sake:
