With a look that would make Minnie Pearl smile and a fingerpicking guitar style that Leo Kottke would be proud to call his own, fabulous country blues chanteuse Del Rey is still one of the music world’s best-kept secrets. She’s played in these parts before, opening for the likes of John Hammond and Johnny Winter, but somehow Rey still remains a blues connoisseur’s favorite instead of a concert hall headliner.
In tandem with blues fiddler extraordinaire and vocalist deluxe Suzy Thompson, Rey brought the duo’s “Hen Party” CD release party-tour to Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs last Friday night for a healthy dose of roots-Americana tunes played with wit, humor and fiery instrumental vitality.
Old tunes and new songs with titles like “Mongoose Hop,” “Devil Dance” and “Doing The Memphis Shakes” were all performed as the ladies frequently switched instruments and circled around a single microphone on stage, much to the delight of the large coffeehouse audience.
