Flashback: 50 Years Ago Bob Dylan Made NYC Debut

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s first major performance in New York City – opening for blues master John Lee Hooker at the fabled folk bastion Gerdes Folk City on April 11, 1961.

Dylan wrote about it in his song, “Talkin’ New York,” which was included on his self-titled debut album:

“After weeks and weeks of hanging around
I finally got a job in New York town
In a bigger place, bigger money too
Even joined the union and paid my dues.”
