2/12/11: Today’s Tips: Saturday

MUSIC: Syd Straw & the Orchestraw Plankton’s “Heartwrecked Show” @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. The glorious Syd Straw offers up sublime Valentine’s Day tunes for lovers, as well as the heartbroken. And she’s bringing along an all-star band that features Don Edgar Piper, Little Red Tiny Baby, Konrad Meissner, Hahn Rowe, Doug Wieselman, Dave Schram, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Jane Scarpantoni, Francis X, Sara Lee… and maybe more. With super singer-songwriter Richard Buckner opening the show. 9pm. $25.

OPERA ON FILM: “Nixon in China” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. Live satellite broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera of John Adams’ groundbreaking 1987 opera. Conducted by Adams. 1pm. $25; 13 and under $15. (Also at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington at 1pm. $25; seniors $23; students $18. Also at the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown at 1pm. $25; students $18.)

MUSIC: Las Manos @ Mare, Saratoga Springs. It’s a CD release party for the Latin jazz-fusion combo’s new disc, “Streets of Zanzibar.” 9pm.

MUSIC: Kevin McKrell & Brian Melick @ the Sand Lake Center for the Arts, Averill Park. Veteran singer-songwriter McKrell teams with his longtime percussionist extraordinaire Melick for a grand night of singing, playing and big-time fun. A benefit concert for the theater. 8pm. $20.

MUSIC: Super 400 @ the Ale House, Troy. Troy’s ace power trio celebrates its 15th anniversary. Benefit for the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. 9pm.

MUSIC: Sara Milonovich & Daisycutter @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The marvelous singer-fiddler is joined by guitarist Greg Anderson, bassist Leo Traversa and drummer Steve Holloway as she showcases selections from her 2010 album, “Daisycutter” as well as some sparkling new material. 8pm. $18.

WORKSHOP: Songwriters in the Round @ Saratoga Arts, Saratoga Springs. Sam Whitehouse Music presents a workshop with three of Saratoga’s most acclaimed songwriters: Michael Jerling, Nancy Walker and Bob Warren. Bring your instrument and test out your material – old or new – and get feedback from the experts. 10:30am-2:30pm. $20.

MUSIC: John Whelan and Donna Hebert @ Old Songs, Voorheesville. Celtic accordionist Whelan teams up with French Canadian fiddler Hebert to explore the musical Irish-French connection. 8pm. $20; 12 and under $5.

THEATER: “The Mystery of Irma Vep” @ Shakespeare & Company’s Bernstein Theater, Lenox. Charles Ludlam’s zany romp directed by Kevin G. Coleman and starring Josh Aaron McCabe and Ryan Winkles, both in multiple roles. 7pm.

MUSIC: Michael Benedict & Bopitude @ Justin’s, Albany. Benedict leaves the vibes at home and slips behind the drums to power some big, bad bop. 9:30pm.

MUSIC: Deluka @ the Fat Spy Tavern, Bondville. With Intelligent Television. 8pm. $5.

CABARET: The Big V-Day Cabaret @ Barrington Stage Co., Pittsfield. Julianne Boyd directs Brian Justin Crum, Trista Dollison, Morgan Karr and Cassie Wooley in a musical celebration of love, romance, frustration, heartache and revenge. 8pm. $30. Through Sunday.

MUSIC: The Jill Hughes Duo @ the Van Dyck, Schenectady. The soulful, romantic sizzle of the grand Ms. Hughes plus a three-course dinner. 7pm. $69.95.

PARTICIPATORY DANCE: St. Valentine’s Day Speakeasy @ the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy. Jason Fenton provides the begineers’ swing dance lessons at 8pm. Doc Scanlon’s Rhythm Boys provide the music at 8:30pm. Dance to the music from the Roaring ’20s through the Big Band ’40s. There will be a best vintage costume contest, a dance contest and lots of fun. 8pm. $15.

MUSIC: Moon Boot Lover @ Putnam Den, Saratoga Springs. Peter Prince and the guys rock it and jam it for the benefit of seven-year-old Hannah Hughes, recently diagnosed with leukemia. 9:30pm.

MUSIC: The Arch Stanton Quartet @ the Midtown Tap & Tea Room, Albany. The foursome teams up with vocalist Michelle Caminos for “Ruby, My Dear: A Night of Valentine Jazz.” 7:30pm.

MUSIC: “Solid Gold Saturday Night: Remember the Fifties: A Salute to The Drifters and The Platters” @ the Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield. It’s Golden Oldies time! With special guests the Corvettes Doo Wop Revue. 7pm. $29.50, $39.50.
