1/15/11: Today’s Tips: Saturday

MUSIC: Capital Underground Live @ Bogie’s, Albany. Downsized from its original venue of the Washington Avenue Armory, the second installment of Ralph Renna’s concert series offers plenty of bang for the buck. Performances by 10 bands – Heal These Wounds, Nephalum, Dryheave, In the Casket, Outlaw Mystic, Maggot Brain, Accusations of the Insane, Distopic, Amalgama, Vicious Rotten Hell Bastards – plus comedians, jugglers, breakdancers and magicians. It’s also a release party for the new 2-CD compilation of local bands, “Capital Underground: The Album,” and you’ll get a copy of the double-disc set for free, too. You can’t beat that… 2pm. $10.

MUSIC: Crooked Still @ The Egg, Albany. Are they a sparkling acoustic chamber ensemble? Or a thinking man’s bluegrass band? Doesn’t matter, does it? Either way, it’s dazzling, dynamic music. 8pm. $26.

MUSIC: Frank Jaklitsch & Friends @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Jaklitsch and friends – including Michael Eck and Bobby Long – serves up their annual charity fundraising concert at the Caffe, which is doubling as a CD release party for Jaklitsch’s new disc, “Hands to Serve, Hearts to Love.” With acoustic blues duo Holly & Evan opening the show. All ticket and CD sales go to charity. 8pm. $16 in advance; $18 at the door.

MUSIC: The Felice Brothers @ MASS MoCA, North Adams. The last couple of times through Nippertown, they opened for the Dave Matthews Band at SPAC and then headlined a music fest at Brewery Ommegang. Now they’re headed into the the area’s premier cutting-edge museum. 8pm. $18 in advance; $22 at the door; students $15.

MUSIC: Tao Rodriguez Seeger & Friends @ Putnam Den, Saratoga Springs. Pete Seeger’s grandson leads an all-star band featuring Pinetop Perkins’ guitarist George Kilby, Jr., Railroad Earth’s bassist Johnny Grubb, Hot Tuna’s Barry Mitterhoff and Loup Garou’s Neil Thomas. With Hot Day at the Zoo. Doors open at 8pm.

MUSIC: Dead Cat Bounce @ Proctors, Schenectady. Electric City native Matt Steckler leads his sax quartet ‘n’ more for a homecoming concert as part of the Party Horns NYC concert series. 7:30pm. $15.

BURLESQUE: S.P.A.M. @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. Scooter Pie leads her monthly rock-n-roll burlesque shebang in its first anniversary celebration, complete with local tassle-twirling talent, visiting guests stars of NYC’s neo-burlesque scene, music, mischief and a game. 12midnight. $5.

MUSIC: The Andrew and Noah Band @ Old Songs, Voorheesville. Led by multi-instrumental virtuosos Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand, the eclectic band also features accordionist Rachel Bell, bassist Kevin Dorsey, drummer Dana Billings and vocalist Kailyn Wright. 8pm. $20; 12 and under $5.

ROLLER DERBY: The Hellions of Troy vs. the Nickel City Knockouts @ Rollarama Skating Center, Schenectady. Doors open at 7pm; first whistle at 8pm. $12 at the door; and a mere $3 for children under 12.

MUSIC: The Elvis Birthday Bash @ Daisy Baker’s, Troy. It’s the annual launch of the rockin’ new year and a celebration of the music of the King of Rock & Roll. Featuring Mark Gamsjager & the Lustre Kings with Johnny Rabb. Probably some special guests will drop by to join in the festivities, too. 10pm.

OPERA ON FILM: “La Fanciulla Del West” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. Metropolitan Opera’s production of Puccini’s wild west opera starring Deborah Voight and Marcello Giordani. 1pm. $25; children $15.

MUSIC: “The Bearsville Sessions” @ Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. A tribute to singer-songwriter Warren Zevon with bassist Jerrry Mitnick, drummer Eric Parker, keyboardist Ross Rice, guitarist Adam Widoff and a variety of special guests. 9pm. $10.

MUSIC: The Brian Patneaude Quartet @ Justin’s, Albany. The saxman fires up his horn alongside pianist Rob Lindquist, bassist Mike Parker and drummer Jeff Siegel. 9:30pm. $5.

MUSIC: Live Wire @ Jillian’s, Albany. AC/DC tribute band. With Stuck On Stupid opening the show. 10pm. $10.

MUSIC: Capstan Shafts @ the Dovecote, 306 Hudson Ave., Albany. The project of Vermont indie lo-fi home recorder Dean Wells, Capstan Shafts stirred up plenty of interest last year with the release of “Revelation Skirts.” NPR named them one of “Five Bands You Should Have Known in 2010.” With Ashley Pond and Bear Grass. 7pm. $5.

MUSIC/ART: Intergalactic Dance Party @ 431 Delaware Avenue, Albany. Live music by Party With Tina, Disposable Rocket Band, BEWARE! the Other Head of Science and Deep Children. Visual art by Chip Fasciana. Doors open at 8pm. $6.

MUSIC: Fort Rooster @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. The perfect after-party for the massive Capital Underground Live marathon at Bogie’s today. With Travis Gray & the Frontiers and the Orchard. Doors open at 8pm.
