Best Concerts of 2010: Leo Purvis

Nippertown reader Leo Purvis weighs in with a list of live performances that he enjoyed during the past 12 months:

Alejandro Escovedo @ The Egg, Albany, September 30. Great songs… crack band… an emotional experience for me.

Incredible Casuals @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany, May 1. Coal Palace Kings warmed us up. The Casuals just rocked long and hard in a rare visit to Nippertown.

Tomasz Stanko @ Freihofer’s Jazz Fest @ SPAC, Saratoga Springs, June 26. The trumpet master sent me way out to the stratosphere as he played at the gazebo stage.

Bill Charlap & Renee Rosnes @ Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Hall, Saratoga Springs, July 6. Two of the best jazz piano masters – who are now married – facing and playing off each other. It was totally engaging, and the lit up trees backdrop enhanced the experience.

Los Straitjackets @ Shepard Park, Lake George, August 4. They were just off a change in personnel due to health issues, but they did it up and took me back to a nice place in the ’60s with a show that made me smile.

Duke Robillard @ the Van Dyck, Schenectady, March 19. Very enjoyable night of blues and swing by a master guitarist.

Albany Riverfront Jazz Fest @ Riverfront Park, Albany, September 11. This fest has a history of being good, and this year John Scofield, Ravi Coltrane, DumpstaPhunk and a beautiful day combined to make it special.

Super 400 @ Rockin’ the River, Troy, August 11. The beer flowed, the river glistened, the sun was hot and the band rocked out.

Lake George Jazz Festival @ Shepard Park, Lake George, September 18-19. Always a treat, and a discovery of new talent in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake and bbq.
