1/6/11: Today’s Tips: Thursday

MUSIC: I/O Fest @ Williams College’s ’62 Center, Williamstown. Opening night of the three-day fest celebrating new and adventurous music. The Iota Ensemble performs works by Rob Silversmith, Jacob Walls, Marcos Balter, Nick Didkovsky, György Kurtág, David Lang and Marc Mellits. 10pm. FREE.

FILM: “Marwencol” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. Jeff Malmberg’s documentary intertwines the dual realities of Mark Hogancamp to tell the whole story of Marwencol, a scale model World War II-era town that Mark created after he was literally beaten to death in a Hudson Valley bar and revived by medics. Unable to afford therapy for the brain damage he incurred, Mark created a fictional town and populated it with dolls representing his friends, family and even his attackers. 5:30pm. $7; students $5. FILM: “Idiots and Angels” @ Time + Space Limited, Hudson. From director and animator Bill Plympton, this is a dark comedy about a man who wakes up one morning with wings on his back… and the ensuing battle for his soul. 7:30pm. $7; students $5. (Through Sunday)

MUSIC: January JazzFest @ the Stockade Inn, Schenectady. Doc Spring & the Rehabilitated Dixieland Jazz Band plays a benefit for the Schenectady Free Health Clinic. With special guest Colleen Pratt. 7pm. $50.
