The weeks running up to Thanksgiving Day and Christmas is always the season of giving.
Local radio station WEQX-FM hosted their 26th anniversary bash last Saturday night at Northern Lights in Clifton Park with a concert featuring Deluka, Travis Gray, Ten Year Vamp, the Velmas, Lunic and Phillips Head, and they managed to raise $988 to benefit the Vermont Foodbank and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. A mighty impressive donation, especially considering that the donation charge at the door was just $5.
“It was a night of great music for a great cause,” said WEQX program director Amber Miller.
And there are lots more opportunities coming up to help out your less fortunate neighbors, even at a time when we are all struggling with financial woes.
On Thursday at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany, it’s the third annual B3nson Family Funsgiving Celebration with seven bands spread out over both floors all night long: We are Jeneric, Scientific Maps, Beware! The Other Head of Science, Barons in the Attic, If Madrid, Que Caro and, of course, Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned. Showtime is 7pm, and admission is $10 at the door (which includes on copy of the “B3nson Family Compilation” CD). But if you bring along a non-perishable food item for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, you’ll receive a $2 discount.
On Friday night, Valentine’s hosts a big multi-band benefit bash, “Neighbors In Need 2010: A Concert to Benefit the Homeless and Hungry,” with all proceeds going to assist the Capital Region Coalition to End Homelessness and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. Admission is $7; or bring along a non-perishable or canned food item and receive a $2 discount. The bands supporting the cause by donating their time and talent include Super 400, the Charlie Watts Riots, Around the World and Back, Tom McWatters & the Philo Beddoe Band, the Landlines, Gracie’s Paris, the Dance Cancer and John Alfred (of the Killerados).
And there’s yet another benefit bash on tap next week at Valentine’s. The fine folks from SwordPaw are presenting a Thanksgiving Eve benefit to help raise much-need funds for the University at Albany’s radio station, WCDB-FM. The Wednesday night celebration (November 24) gets underway at 8pm on Wednesday with music from Slender Shoulders, the Emergency Empire, Life Among the Trees and Eric Margan. Plus there will be turkey ‘n’ fixin’s for your dining pleasure, too. All that for just $7 donation at the door ($8 for those between 18-20 years old).
