Caffe Lena’s 50th anniversary celebration rolls on…
Presented by the Caffe, singer-songwriter sensation Ani DiFranco stormed into the Arthur Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs and delivered a concert chock-full of powerhouse songs with the driving force of a gale-force hurricane.
Bobbing and weaving at the microphone, the self-described “little folksinger” wailed with abandon while wrestling a torrent of notes from her dreadnaught-sized acoustic guitar.
During the show DiFranco revealed to the full house audience that she had turned 40. To many in attendance, it was hard to believe that time had passed by so fast. Had nearly two decades already passed since she made her debut on Caffe Lena’s hallowed stage? She was in her very early 20s back then – and that was about the number of people that came to see her at her first Nippertown show.
Well, times have changed. And on Sunday night on the Arthur Zankel Music Center’s huge concert hall stage – with the picturesque floor-to-ceiling window as a backdrop – Ani DiFranco was playing her songs to a sold-out crowd of over 600 enthusiastic fans.
The very talented Erin McKeown opened the show with her original songs and guitar style. Not quite a folk typhoon (as folk vet Tom Paxton once described Ani), McKeown’s performance was more a warm, comforting on a chilly autumn evening.
