Honor thy father… Dweezil Zappa and his band Zappa Plays Zappa is on the road playing the music of Frank Zappa in honor of Zappa the Elder’s 70th birthday (December 21). At 8pm on Thursday, December 16, the tour makes a stop at The Egg in Albany. The band will perform 1974’s classic “Apostrophe” – Zappa’s only Top 10 album – in its entirety. Tix go on sale at 10am on Friday.

At The Linda in Albany, 18-year-old jazz keyboard phenom Matt Savage takes the spotlight at 7pm on Friday in a special concert to benefit LEAP, Inc., a non-profit group in New York’s Capital District that supports equine-assisted programs for children, young adults and veterans with special needs. Tix are $30.

The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall is bringing in soulful retro-crooner Steve Tyrell at 8pm on Saturday, April 2. Tix are $28, $32 and $37. Other new shows on the Music Hall slate include a tribute to Frank Sinatra & Barbra Streisand at 3pm on Sunday, October 10 ($30, $40); Papa Duke & Friends at 7pm on Saturday, October 23 ($25, $30); former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay at 7:30pm on Friday, November 5 ($20, $25, $50); a tribute to the Rat Pack at 3pm on Sunday, November 21 ($30, $40); Andy Cooney’s Irish Christmas Show at 7:30pm on Saturday, December 11 ($29, $34).

Enter the Haggis rocked the house earlier this month at the Irish 2000 Music & Arts Festival, and they’re headed back to town on Saturday, December 11 for some crackin’ Celtic rock at Jillian’s in Albany.

Here’s one that I know you weren’t expecting… Andy Shernoff of punk pioneers the Dictators is headed into Holmes & Watson at 450 Broadway in Troy for an acoustic performance that includes some fabulous, straight-from-the-horse’s-mouth stories about the early glory days of the NYC punk scene. Johnny Mystery and Mark LaRose of the Mysteios open the show. It all takes place at 8:30pm on Friday, October 22. Admission is $10.

British metalcore combo Asking Alexandria steamrolls into Northern Lights in Clifton Park at 7pm on Wednesday, November 10. Opening the show are Born of Osiris and Ultrageist. Priced at $15, advance tix will go on sale at 10am Saturday.

Cancelled: The Freddie Mercury and Queen tribute band Celebrating Queen was originally slated to play The Egg on August 7, but that show was postponed. It was re-scheduled for Friday, October 8, but now that performance has officially been cancelled, too.

In case you missed it… The nouveau flamenco guitar duo of Rodrigo y Gabriela have cancelled their tour, including the show that was slated for The Egg… On the plus side, however, The Egg announced four more new showsJackson Browne is playing a solo acoustic show at the Bardavon Theater in Poughkeepsie on Saturday, October 16.
