9/24/10: Today’s Tips: Friday

MUSIC: Lost in the Trees @ the Eighth Step at Proctors, Schenectady. Nippertown’s venerable coffeehouse launches the Indie 8th Step, a series of concerts spotlighting the talents of new young indie rock musicians. Led by singer-guitarist Ari Picker, Lost in the Trees fits the bill perfectly with their captivating, lush orchestral pop sounds. And they’re celebrating the release of their new album, “All Alone in an Empty Room” on Anti- Records. 7:30pm. $15.

DANCE: Mark Morris Dance Group @ The Egg, Albany. The always witty, energetic choreography of Mr. Morris and his company comes to The Egg tonight, as they dance to live music by Chopin, Barber, Harrison and Gershwin. With a free, pre-performance talk at 7:15pm. 8pm. $36; seniors $32; children $18.

MUSIC: Gary Smulyan @ Professor Java’s Coffee Sanctuary, Colonie. Since the passing of the great Nick Brignola, Smulyan has become the jazz world’s go-to guy on the baritone sax. He make the big, bruising horn honk tough and sing sweet. Nippertown jazzers Joe Barna (drums) and Lou Smaldone (bass) are the rhythm section. (also Saturday) 8pm.

MUSIC: The Mike Moreno Quintet @ A Place for Jazz at the First Unitarian Society Whisperdome, Schenectady. The dynamic jazz guitarist has been heard on albums by John Ellis, Jeremy Pelt, Kendrick Scott, Q-Tip and Albany’s own Brian Patneaude, as well as his own recordings. Tonight he plays with pianist Aaron Parks, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Ted Poor. 8pm. $15.

MUSIC: The Ryan Montbleau Band @ Jillian’s, Albany. A CD release party for the band’s eclectic, brand new album, “Heavy on the Vine,” produced by Martin Sexton and released on the Blue’s Mountain label. With Jesse Dee. 9pm. $17.

MUSIC: John Hiatt @ the Calvin Theater, Northampton. The veteran roots-music singer-songwriter sublime takes the spotlight for a solo show this time around. With Holly Williams opening the show. 8pm. $25, $35, $45.

MUSIC: Acoustic Eidolon @ Old Songs, Voorheesville. The Colorado duo of Joe Scott on his unique, 14-string, double-neck guitjo and Hannah Alkire on cello create a sublime “new acoustic” sound that melds Celtic, folk, world and Latin music influences. 8pm. $20; children $5.

THEATER: “Peter Pan” @ Russell Sage College’s Meader Little Theatre, Troy. Directed by Michael Musial, the musical tale of the boy who won’t grow up takes flight…literally. 8pm. $10; students & seniors $8. (Also 8pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday)

MUSIC: Jess Klein, Natalia Zukerman, Antje Duvekot @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. An evening of sparkling acoustic music from three fine female singer-songwriters. 8pm. $18.
