The Quarrymen return: Saturday, October 9 will mark the 70th anniversary of the birth of John Lennon, but the folks at The Egg in Albany will be starting the celebration several days earlier with the “John Lennon Birthday Tribute” at 7pm on Wednesday, October 6. The evening will off off with a screening of the John Lennon bio-pic “Nowhere Boy,” starring Aaron Johnson. And following the movie, The Egg will host a live performance by Lennon’s first band – The Quarrymen. Tix are $18; a limited number of $40 VIP tickets include a post-concert reception with the Quarrymen (proceeds to benefit the Arts Center of The Capital Region). Tix go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 23.
Bang on a drum: The 19th annual Woodstock Beat (a benefit for the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild) will take place at the Maverick Concert Hall in Woodstock at 8pm on Saturday, July 31. The concert celebrates the 40th anniversary of Steve Reich’s masterwork, “Drumming,” with a performance that will feature Steve Reich and Musicians, Nexus and So Percussion. The program will also include such Reich works as “Clapping Music,” “Music for Pieces of Wood,” “Music for Mallets, Voices and Organ” and “Nagoya Marimbas.” Tix are $60 (reserved seating); $20 (general admission). There are also reserved VIP tix for $100, which include admission to the pre-concert party.
The great Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot steps into the spotlight at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall at 8pm on Friday, October 8. Priced at $40 and $50, tix to hear the legendary troubadour will go on sale to the general public on Friday.
Comedian Brian Regan is headed back to the Palace Theatre in Albany at 8pm on Friday, September 24. Tix are $38.50.
Several new shows have been added to the calendar at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, including the New Deal at 9pm on Thursday, September 23 (tix $17 in advance; go on sale at 10am Friday); the Misfits with Juicehead at 6:30pm on Wednesday, October 20 (tix $16 in advance; on sale at 10am Saturday); and Michael Franti & Spearhead at 8pm Monday, October 25 (tix $25 in advance; go on sale at 10am on Friday, July 30).
Veteran piano man Leon Russell rumbles into the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock at 8pm on Wednesday, August 18. His concert will include a preview of “The Union,” his upcoming album collaboration with Elton John that’s due for release in October. All tix are $40 general admission.
The Albany Sonic Arts Collective presents an all-star noise ‘n’ more performance at 8pm on Tuesday, July 27 at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany. The line-up of performers includes Spykes (solo project of Wolf Eyes’ John Olson) and Family Battle Snake (Bill Kouligas of Berlin), as well as local Nippertown noise boys Rambutan and Fossils From the Sun.
The Boston-based husband-and-wife folk duo Matt and Shannon Heaton were one of the hits of the Old Songs Festival of Traditional Music and Dance last month, and now Tri-City Trad is bringing the duo back for a concert of their own at Old Songs at 8pm on Friday, July 30. Tix are $20.
