Yes, the New York State budget now officially a gazillion days late. There have been threats of furloughs and layoffs for state workers. And the entire state is on the verge of complete financial meltdown.
But the parties will go on at the Empire State Plaza this summer.
Of course, when NYS Office of General Services commissioner John Egan announced the schedule of events for the 2010 At the Plaza summer concert and festival series, he was quick to point out, “Through the generous support of community sponsors, we are able to continue these free events which have become an important part of summer in the Capital Region, with no direct cost to the state.”
As usual, the biggest of the big events is the annual Fabulous Fourth and Fireworks Festivities on Sunday, July 4. The musical headliner for the day-long festivities will be Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, followed by the traditionally huge fireworks display.
Wait a minute, Herman’s Hermits? We’re going to celebrate American independence on the Fourth of July with a British Invasion band?
A complete listing of musical acts and entertainment for the concerts and festivals will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here’s what the 2010 At The Plaza summer schedule looks like so far:
