Yes, this weekend is Caffé Lena’s 50th anniversary celebration, and there are two gala concerts on tap – the reunion of Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur at the Caffe at 7pm on Friday ($75, which includes beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and dessert) and Arlo Guthrie with Robin & Linda Williams and Their Fine Group at Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center at 7pm on Saturday ($50).
But, of course, Caffe Lena has never been only about big-ticket shows, so the venerable coffeehouse is also hosting a free, family-friendly 50th Anniversary Festival throughout the day on Saturday. A dozen Caffé Lena favorites will be performing from 10am-4pm Saturday – both inside the Caffe, as well as out on the street.
In fact, there’s so much going on all day long that the City of Saratoga Springs has declared Saturday to be officially Caffé Lena Day by proclamation.
Among the many performers at the free festival will be Michael Eck & Frank Jaklitsch, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, the Barefoot Boys, Torey Adler, Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys, Jo Henley, Don & Victoria Armstrong, Susan Trump, Rick Rourke & Lost Wages, the Bob Warren Band, Rosanne Raneri and Alien Folklife.
In addition, a slate of indoor/outdoor family activities will include Morris dancing; a telling of the classic “Stone Soup” story along with participatory soup-making; a Tai Chi demonstration by Tai Chi master and accomplished Delta blues artist Mark Tolstrup; a drumming workshop led by Sam Zucchini of the Zucchini Brothers; and an opportunity for patrons of all ages to hand decorate a mug that will be used for regular service at Caffé Lena.
