Caffe Lena Photo of the Day

Saratoga Springs’ famed coffeehouse Caffe Lena is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, and we’re joining in the celebration by publishing one photo a day all month long from the archives of eagle-eyed house photographer Joe Deuel.

One of the Caffe’s most frequent and beloved guests was singer-songwriter-storyteller Bruce U. Utah Phillips. He died two years ago, but this past Saturday was the 75th anniversary of his birth, so here’s an early ’80s photo of the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest:

Joe’s series of great photographs here on Nippertown bring back many memories. It’s hard to imagine Utah as a young man because of his big, grey, bushy beard that was always there- at least in my memory of him. Great shot!
