Sunday, May 24 rolls around on the calendar with a bittersweet taste this year. The day marks the 68th birthday of Bob Dylan, which is, of course, always reason for celebration.
But it’s also a certain sadness surrounding the day because this year will be the first in a decade without the Bob Dylan Birthday Bash at Schenectady’s Union College. After 10 years, co-organizers Dale Metzger and Michael Eck are totally tuckered out, and it seems as though no one else has stepped up to carry on the annual tradition.
Over the years, the marathon tribute concerts have left Dylan fans with dozens of great musical memories, including unforgettable performances by Bryan Thomas, MotherJudge, Peter Prince, the Decadent Royals, Mitch Elrod and oh so many more.
Fortunately, Club Helsinki in Great Barrington, Mass. is continuing its own homage to Bob. The fourth annual “Forever Young: A Birthday Tribute to Bob Dylan” will be presented at the intimate club at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 24, featuring performances by Seth Rogovoy, Matt Tannenbaum, John Clarke and many others.
